Ride Schedule for February 2024
Leader: Mark Nienberg (510) 812-9312 text
Meet at 9:30 am
Cancelled due to almost certain rain.
This weekly ride often tours through West Marin, but sometimes travels to Napa, Sonoma, or Livermore, depending on the season. We have frequent regroups and usually stop for a real lunch, if it is available on the route. This listing will be updated when the route and leader have been determined, usually by Monday evening. Status updates for weather cancellations will also be posted on the schedule.
There is often a faster (more like M pace) group on this ride, but we all come back together at frequent regroups and lunch. Faster riders should feel free to push on after lunch. Just tell the leader first.

Meet at 5:20 pm for a 5:30 pm start
Start Location: North Berkeley BART
Pre-registration
Tonight's ride is canceled due to likely rain. We'll hope for better weather next week.
Please join us for a weekly Thursday evening ride. This is a short ride but with a steep climb! We’ll head up Virginia St and Spruce to Spruce/Grizzly Peak for our first regroup, then head out along Wildcat Canyon to South Park Rd. From there, we’ll climb South Park, descend, and climb it again as many times as the mood strikes us (usually two or three times is enough, but individual riders can shorten or lengthen the ride as desired). South Park is closed to cars starting November 1st, which makes it perfect for winter riding. If we complete two round trip ascents up South Park then back to N Berkeley Bart, expect about 2,300 feet of elevation gain. This is a great way to stay in shape over the winter!
NOTE: This is a night ride. Come with bright front and rear lights (and make sure they work). 20% chance or greater of rain cancels the ride. Please contact ride leaders with any questions.

GPC Route: Delta Birding
Start Location: Isleton Main Street
Pre-registration
Please preregister. There is a public parking lot at the ride start in Isleton with a public restroom nearby. Lunch is on the deck at the Cosumnes River Preserve visitor center. Bring lunch or buy at the Subway located just after crossing under Interstate 5 at Thornton Rd near the Chevron station. Historic Locke and Mel's Mocha & Ice Cream at Walnut Grove are worthwhile side adventures, but the main seasonal attraction is the birds: Sand Hill Cranes, and large numbers of geese and other waterbirds--bring binoculars for best viewing. Major birding sites include Staten Island Rd, the marsh across from the Cosumnes Visitor Center, and Desmond/Bruceville Roads. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31833186
Riders who want to spend more time birding, Meet Pat near the beginning of Staten Island road at 10 for the 25 mile ride. There there is a parking lot and seasonal portapotty at this site. If you want to start at Staten Island, please register for the ride, and e-mail Pat to coordinate. Cell phone service may be sketchy out there for some of us. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38563999
WEATHER: WATCH FOR UPDATES. Right now the weather forecast looks favorable, but NOAA forecasts a system coming in Wed evening. The other variable to watch is the fog forecast with some forecasting morning fog. Expect a cooler start than for bay area rides with temps rising to ~60 in current forecast. Dress in warmer layers than the temp indicates to be comfortable standing around looking at birds.

Meet at 7:30 am Rain Date: Sat Feb 24
Postponed to 2/24 due to rain on Saturday
80-mile route: meet 8:45am, roll at 8:55am
52-mile route: meet 9:55am, roll at 10:10am
For 100-mile route, start/end at my home near Cotati: 5523 Henning Road (short distance from Hwy 116, plenty of parking), meet @7:30 roll @7:45am. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/39000447
For 80-mile version, start/end in Freestone. We'll be regrouping in Freestone ca. 8:45am, roll at 8:55am. If you are starting from Freestone, please be ready to ride at 8:55am. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38963426
For 52-mile version, start/end in Duncans Mills, We'll regroup in Duncans Mills ca. 9:55am, roll at 10:10am. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/39375366
For those riding either of the longer options, refreshments at Duncans Mills. We'll be there at least as long as it takes me to eat a pint of ice cream (typically 12 - 15 minutes). For all options, (somewhat late) lunch stop at the store in Fort Ross; there are decent food options at this store, which will be our longest stop (ca 30 minutes). Bathrooms: Freestone, Duncans Mills, Cazadero, Fort Ross, Jenner, Valley Ford
100 mile route: We will plan on finishing before sunset (which will be 5:51pm) but a mechanical or two could easily have us finishing later. So for the 100 mile option lights are mandatory. Keep in mind that, if we do wind up finishing after sunset, there are no street lights on the roads of our return route, and there is a fairly long descent on Bay Hill Road; the moon will only be about half-full. Unless rain pushes us to the 2/24 rain-date, in which case we'll have a full moon..
This time of year, mornings in Cotati can be quite cold, and afternoons quite warm, so check the weather the day before and dress with appropriately flexible options.
Please pre-register, and let me know where you'll be starting from, so I'll know to look for you at the starting points for the 2 shorter options.

This February TSR is postponed until 3/3/2024 due to rain. (FSR?) Will have the regularly scheduled TSR on 3/17 as well.
We'll do the usual Tunnel, go through Moraga and Orinda, and return to our neck of the woods via Wildcat. The only twists are the neighborhoods we wend through along the way. We will approach Tunnel from Berkeley instead of from Keith and Broadway in Oakland. Returning, we will, from Spruce, turn well before Los Angeles to go through quieter streets before getting on more well traveled roads like California and Russell. Please check out this route and pin it if you come on this ride. Meet at 9:45. Roll at 9:55.

NOTE: This is a night ride. Come with bright front and rear lights (and make sure they work). 20% chance or greater of rain cancels the ride. Please contact ride leaders with any questions.

Returning, we will, from Spruce, turn well before Los Angeles to go through quieter streets before getting on more well traveled roads like California and Russell.
