Ride Schedule for October 2024
Leader: Fletcher Stump Smith (415) 212-8451 text
Meet at 5:50 pm for a 6:00 pm start
Start Location: MacArthur BART
Pre-registration
It's going to be hot, so let's stay on the coast. We'll be riding all the coastal trails, some parts will be unpaved, but most bikes should be able to handle this ride as long as you are comfortable with the occasional loose gravel. There is an approximate route but we'll plan on taking it easy and sticking together and a few of the turns might be slightly different than what is shown. Ride ends at headlands brewing, we'll aim to get there before they close around 9pm.

Meet at 10:00 am for a 10:15 am start
GPC Route: Mt. Tam CCW. Return via Hwy 1
Start Location: Mill Valley - Public Safety Buildings
Pre-registration
Out of an abundance of caution and a desire to prevent heat stroke, we have decided to cancel this ride. It's going to be too hot out there on all those exposed hills. Stay tuned for a possible informal Bay Trail substitute.
From Mill Valley Public Safety, climb to Panoramic and up Ridgecrest. Optional out-and-back to East Peak. Return via Bolinas - Fairfax west and Hwy 1. Lunch in Stinson Beach. You can also join our web forum and check the forum archives for the current information or contact Mark Sapiro at (415) 388-8910.

Meet at 5:25 pm for a 5:35 pm start
Start Location: El Cerrito Del Norte BART
Pre-registration
Same route as before, 35mm tires or wider are recommended. Days are getting shorter now, bring lights for the ride back to BART. There are a few spots with trail damage to watch out for but it hasn't been a big issue. Conditions are dry, cracked, and dusty but it's better here than in a lot of east bay parks right now. Make sure your bike is in good working order and bring whatever you'll need to fix a flat or other simple mechanical issues. Also make sure your tires are properly inflated, if you aren't sure what pressure to run this is a good starting point.

Meet at 9:30 am
GPC Route: Nicasio to Lighthouse via Sam P Taylor
Start Location: Nicasio
Pre-registration
Take refuge from the heat forecast with this classic Marin ride on nice pavement. It's never hot at the lighthouse!
Our usual route has been modified to avoid the construction on Olema Hill. Instead, we'll start through Samuel P Taylor Park and take Platform Bridge toward Pt Reyes Station. We'll make a stop in Inverness Park to pick up lunch, then carry it out to the lighthouse. Feel free to order ahead at the Inverness Park Market. On the return trip we will stop in Pt. Reyes Station.
There is sometimes a faster (more like M pace) group on this ride, but we all come back together at frequent regroups and lunch.

Meet at 4:50 pm for a 5:00 pm start
Start Location: North Berkeley BART
Pre-registration
Due to the expected heat on our "bonus" ride today, we might ride down to the Bay Trail and ride along the water for cooler temps. Let's see how the weather is when we meet at N. Berkeley BART.
Please join us for this friendly Thursday evening TM ride that’s designed to finish before it gets too dark. This is a bonus ride following the spring/summer Thursday ride series that officially ended on 9/26. We’ll meet at North Berkeley BART (by the main BART entrance) at 4:50 pm, and we’ll be ready to roll at 5:00 pm sharp. We'll go up Spruce and out Grizzly Peak and Skyline, then down Shepherd Canyon and back to North Berkeley BART. Bring lights and a jacket for the return trip as we’ll likely finish the ride just after sunset. Route map: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/39823113.

Meet at 8:00 pm for a 8:10 pm start
Start Location: North Berkeley BART
Pre-registration
Update: not really expecting northern lights tonight. However, weather should still be pleasant for an evening ride.
Let's try to catch the northern lights if they are visible. If not, it's still a great time to ride at night in short sleeves-it should be in the high 60s or 70s quite late.
Meet at N Berkeley BART, ride up Shasta+South Park. No drop-will go as slow as the slowest rider. Feel free to bring food+drinks for yourself or to share. Will be a nice night to hang out for a couple of hours. Planning on staying at least until 10 PM or when they kick us out.
Route to Vollmer Peak: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/48658945
Can take the same route down, or go down Claremont or Centennial or Spruce. Strength in numbers!

This month we are trying out Johnny's Doughnuts at Larkspur Landing. There is also a popular Farmers Market (with fantastic pastries from Rustic Bakery) in the same mall which you can explore. We will ride our bikes over the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, and enjoy a warm donut or pastry.
We welcome new riders! A large portion of the route is on dedicated bike path, but please be cautious going over train tracks in Richmond. We will have a bathroom and water stop at Richmond Marina Park about 6 miles in.

Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start
Pre-registration
We'll do Paradise Loop from the Gilman Fields (aka Tom Bates fields) in Berkeley - there's usually parking, and the Bay Trail starts right there: 400-408 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA 94710
We'll stop at Larkspur Landing briefly on the other side of the bridge for water and restrooms, then we'll stop for snacks/food/water/bathrooms about halfway at Woodlands Market in Tiburon.
It's going to be hot so please bring two bottles of water - hopefully sticking closer to the water will help keep it a little cool for us!
See you Sunday!

This one is a ride on pavement for a change, RWGPS. Make sure to bring a good set of lights as the days are getting shorter. The temperature forecast is looking very reasonable, but be prepared for heat or cold. Ride ends in Emeryville, with the option of food/drinks. The initial section may be a bit more cars than on my usual routes; expect to need to ride single file at times.

Meet at 10:00 am for a 10:15 am start
GPC Route: Mt. Veeder Counterclockwise
Start Location: Cuttings Wharf
Pre-registration
Let's revisit our regular counterclockwise ride to Mt. Veeder and enjoy fall colors in the vineyards with the new (for some) return route that includes a beautiful bike trail along a eucalyptus grove! The road closure on the northside of Mt Veeder has been repaired ! Plan for a warm, sunny day with temperatures warm but not hopefully too hot as the heat wave is scheduled to break. The climb up Mt Veeder will mostly be in the shade and then the remaining part of the ride is either downhill or mostly flat. Bring plenty of water and snacks; late lunch stop at Browns Valley Market and the yogurt shop and maybe their special pumpkin flavor. Then we will take our new return route back to the cars at Cuttings Wharf.

Shorten the ride to about 42 miles by starting in Nicasio. We should pass through there about 10:20 or so.

Would like to get a regular Friday evening ride for anyone interested, not necessarily wedded to this route. A longer option would be to add Nimitz out and back, which would make this 18 miles with 2000 ft climbing.

Grizzlies! We are holding a party at Oakland United Beerworks (the same brewery that so generously donated to the century this year, so we are excited to support them!). There will be 2 rides before the party - a T-paced 35 mile and a TM-paced 50 mile. Join a ride and then come to the party, or just come straight to the party - whatever you like! Yes, we will also be discussing and recruiting for the open coordinator positions for the 2025 Century but don't worry - you don't need to commit to anything to join the party! Bring your appetite and an open mind and head over to the Oakland United Beerworks in Jack London Square at 1PM for some grub, some brews, and some century news!
The party will start around 1PM when riders start rolling in.
Oakland United Beerworks 262 2nd St, Oakland, CA 94607
We'll be in the mezzanine but they've reserved a large space for us indoors where we can safely store our bikes. There is also free street parking on Sundays, although it may be a little crowded because the Jack London Square farmers market takes place on Sundays too (but it usually ends around the time that our party is starting, so you be the judge!).
Please RSVP so we can tell OUB how many of us to expect: https://forms.gle/epkR9ymJyGULCSZj6
Each rider will receive 1-2 beers (still working out the details with OUB), and we'll also order a bunch of snacks and tacos from the nearby food trucks for you hungry riders.
For riders and public transportation takers - the ride will start at Rockridge BART so if you need to ride back there from Jack London Square, it's a straight 4 miles up Broadway, and should take about 20 minutes. If you're feeling lazy or a little buzzy after the food and beer, or just looking for general public transportation options, 12th Street BART is less than a mile away and you can hop on that back to Rockridge (or anywhere BART takes you!).

GPC Route: Miller Creek to Tomales (long version)
Start Location: San Rafael - Marinwood Community Center
Pre-registration
From Marinwood to Tomales via Nicasio and Chileno Valley, return via Hwy 1. This longer version of the ride comes into Tomales from the back side using Alexander, Fallon Two Rock, and Middle Roads.
There are some shorter options. You can start your ride in Nicasio to save 20 miles for the day. We should pass through there around 10:15. Also, you can skip the turn onto Alexander and ride straight into Tomales for the lunch stop. That saves about 4 miles. Please review the map ahead of time and be prepared to navigate this change on your own if you think you might want to do it.
There is sometimes a faster (more like M pace) group on this ride, but we all come back together at frequent regroups and lunch. We'll start when everyone who arrives by the meeting time is ready. If you arrive after the meeting time, you may have to chase. You can probably catch us at our regroup in Nicasio.

This is our last ride of the season! We'll shorten the ride and descend down Tunnel Rd because of the earlier sunset. Please join us for a post-ride dinner at Station Burger (Claremont and Tunnel Rd). We'll arrive at Station Burger around 6:30 pm. Bring front and back bike lights!
Please join us for this friendly Thursday evening TM ride that’s designed to finish before it gets too dark. This is a bonus ride following the spring/summer Thursday ride series that officially ended on 9/26. Meet at 8:15 am Rain Date: Sun Oct 27
Start Location: Livermore - Ernie Rodrigues Softball fields
Pre-registration
It's that time of year. The weather is turning to Fall which means the tarantulas are on the move. What better place than the remote and spectacular roads of eastern Alameda County and the San Antonio Valley to view these shy arachnids? This is a very simple out and back along Mines Road and Route 130 as we go up the backside of Hamilton. Meet at 8:15 for a 8:30 roll out from the softball fields in Livermore. I don't know if the Junction is open (it won't be on the way out) but there should be water at the CalFire station. Bring coins/bills for the vending machines at the Visitor Center at the top of Mt. Hamilton. The route is pretty straight forward and can be found here: Backside of Hamilton. If you are lamenting that you won't get a full century ride in, you can add a bonus climb up and down Del Valle to the park entrance gates. If you are even more adventurous, you can take care of two of the 2024 Epic Climbs (Del Valle Mendenhall and Del Valle - out of park). We'll be waiting for you at HomeGrownHops on Mines near Tesla. Rain, hot weather or bad AQI will push the ride to the next day. Check here for updates.

Join us for the winter edition of Treasure Island lap, starting at the Bay Bridge base of the Alex Zuckermann bike path. Ride ends with optional food and drinks at Bay Street or Wondrous Brewing Company. Bring lights and warm layers.

Another Road Ride, this ones is a bit experimental as I'm less familiar with some of the roads in this route, so we can explore together. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/48764943 Make sure to bring bright lights as days are getting shorter and there isn't much light up in the hills. Ends at North Berkeley Bart.

Morgan Territory from Heather Farm
Start Location:
Walnut Creek - Heather Farm
Pre-registration
This ride goes up to Morgan Territory Staging area where we have lunch at picnic tables. Water and restrooms available. Then a long exposed descent off the back, looping around through Blackhawk and Danville to return through urban streets to Heather Farms. We will have to discuss the Blackhawk regroup as I am not familiar with the indicated RWGPS stop.
Rain cancels. You can also join our web forum and check the forum archives for the current information or contact Mark Sapiro at (415) 388-8910.

GPC Route:
Heather Farm, Morgan Territory, Diablo Junction
Start Location:
Walnut Creek - Heather Farm
Pre-registration
Meet in the penultimate northern parking lot of Heather Farm in Walnut Creek (by the baseball fields) for this ride to Clayton, Morgan Territory, and Diablo Junction. Lunch will be at Draeger's Market in Blackhawk Plaza.
Note that Heather Farm is about a mile from Pleasant Hill BART, which is probably the preferred way to get there. If you want to make the ride easier you can skip the Diablo climb after lunch and work your way back on the Iron Horse Trail or using this nicer route. Navigation for those options is up to you.
There is sometimes a faster (more like M pace) group on this ride, but we all come back together at frequent regroups and lunch. We'll start when everyone who arrives by the meeting time is ready. If you arrive after the meeting time you may have to chase. You can probably catch us at the park in Clayton, where we will have a brief stop.

Meet at 8:45 for a 9:00AM rollout from Rockridge BART. We'll head up Tunnel, down Pinehurst, into Moraga and then Lafayette by way of the bike trail, back up Reliez Valley and Pig Farm, into El Sobrante and over Hillcrest and then the bike path and the flats back to Jack London Square in time for the century recruitment party at Oakland Beerworks.
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/48618377
It's going to heat up so bring enough water to get you through to cold brews and tacos at the party! We will have brief water / bathroom / snack stops along the way but we don't want to spoil our appetites nor miss the party, so we'll keep the train moving as much as possible.

Miller Creek to Tomales (long version)
Start Location:
San Rafael - Marinwood Community Center

We’ll tackle Palomares first thing, then roll into Fremont for a quick bathroom stop at Starbucks at about Mile 20.
From there, we’ll head to Milpitas and stop at Ed Levin park at Mile 34 for bathrooms and water.
We’ll climb the Calaveras Wall and then it’s nothing but smooth sailing along Calaveras and Foothill back to Dublin. We’ll most likely stop at the Sunol Market as well just for fun.
