Ride Schedule for April 2024

Meet at 9:30 am for a 9:45 am start
GPC Route: Just Jalama Beach
Start Location: Jalama Road pullout
Pre-registration
A remote road to the Coast. By remote I mean a full sized mountain lion slowly crossed the road right in front of Brian on a recent trip.
This is a beautiful route with just one hill, each way. Lunch is at Jalama Beach where you can get a famous Jalama Beach Burger. Or you can get something healthier and make it back. The crux of this route is learning to say Halama, not Jalama.
Current membership in GPC is expected. A cheerful adventurous attitude is encouraged. The route is listed above. Load it to your navigation device or print your own cue sheet. There will not be a paper handout. Please pre-register if you would like the leader to keep some track of you; there will not be a paper sign in sheet at the ride start. Two full water bottles and some nutrition make good sense. The standards listed in the Rider Guidelines on our website always apply.
Water is available at the campgrounds at Jalama Beach.

Meet at 9:30 am for a 9:45 am start
GPC Route: 3/4 Jalama
Start Location: Jalama Road pullout
Pre-registration
Join us for this classic route to Jalama Beach. This 53 mile version requires a car shuttle, which we arrange at Happy Hour the night before. We drive out to the start on Jalama Road, then ride to the beach. After lunch we ride all the way back to Solvang. There are several other options which can be discussed at Happy Hour. A full out-and-back from Solvang would be about 77 miles. The shortest version (see listing for Just Jalama) is an out and back to Jalama Beach from Highway 1, and it still has plenty of climbing.
There will not be the extra water stop this year. The standards listed in the Rider Guidelines on our website always apply.

Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start
GPC Route: Mt. Figueroa Adventure Loop
Start Location: Solvang - Royal Copenhagen Inn
Pre-registration
This is the big one, Mt Diablo on steroids, maybe similar to Mt Ventoux, except with much steeper pitches! But this is your lucky day, it's not so steep from the East Side, just far more rustic. Be ready for a mile of dirt, some slippery stream crossings, lots of broken rock on the road, and continuous steep grades. Once you reach the summit, you then descend down the Westside, pass the Neverland Ranch, and have lunch at Panino in Los Olivos. Then you can take Ballard Canyon or flatter roads back to Solvang.
A cheerful adventurous attitude is encouraged. Strong navigation skills or riding with a buddy who knows the route can be very helpful. Print your own cue sheet if needed. Please sign in online if you would like the leader to keep some track of you; there may not be a paper sign in sheet at the ride start. Two full water bottles and some nutrition makes good sense. The standards listed in the Rider Guidelines on our website always apply.
Bring extra water and food on this ride!

Got nothing to prove with big climbs? Already got the t-shirt? Enjoy the great ride from the first day in the other direction. It is still a stunning ride, and puts lunch at a more convenient time, at Panino's, Los Olivos. Finish on Ballard Canyon. Please sign in online.

GPC Route: Pozo Loop

Note the later start time since we will be driving to get to the start. Accessed on our travel day between Solvang and Paso Robles, Pozo Loop offers up stunning scenery! There is good parking at the Community Park. Bring two full water bottles, as the water at the Ranger Station still says non potable. We will watch the temperatures, we just did this ride and it was too hot (80 in town, 96 on bike). We generally eat at "The Porch" restaurant in town after the ride.

Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start
GPC Route: Tour de Paso
Start Location: Adelaide Inn, Paso Robles
Pre-registration
Due to high probability of rain by 11 AM, I will run a "Peachy Canyon the easy way" leaving promptly at 9 AM. It will be cold and it probably will rain by the end of the ride. Be at Happy Hour for any updates.
I have reworked this route to be a 42 miler and start with the delightfull rolling flats east of town, get well warmed up, skip the busy highway that we used in the past, then finish on silky smooth Willow creek, Vineyard, then a climb up and over Adelaida Road. This is a great tour of most all of the local roads which offer a lot of rolling hills, farms, and great scenery. Lunch could be had back in Paso around the Town Square, although on this route that would be a detour. I'd recommend Pappy McGregor's.
A cheerful adventurous attitude is encouraged. Strong navigation skills or riding with a buddy who knows the route can be very helpful. Please sign in online if you would like the leader to keep some track of you; there may not be a paper sign in sheet at the ride start. Two full water bottles and some nutrition makes good sense. GPC Route: Parkfield Earthquake Ride
Start Location: Mission San Miguel Arcángel
Pre-registration
This ride is now cancelled due to 60% chance of rain. Please consider the "Peachy Canyon the Easy Way" loop, which may avoid the rain.
This ride starts in San Miguel. Please park across the street from the Mission. This is an out and back to the North American Plate. Just across the fault is the rustic town of Parkfield that serves up a great lunch. There is only one hill on this ride and you hit it both ways. Rain may cancel.

Meet at 9:30 am
Pre-registration
Ride is canceled this week as all the usual leaders are out of town. See you next week.
This weekly ride often tours through West Marin, but sometimes travels to Napa, Sonoma, or Livermore, depending on the season. We have frequent regroups and usually stop for a real lunch, if it is available on the route. This listing will be updated when the route and leader have been determined, usually by Monday evening. Status updates for weather cancellations will also be posted on the schedule.
There is often a faster (more like M pace) group on this ride, but we all come back together at frequent regroups and lunch. Faster riders should feel free to push on after lunch. Just tell the leader first.

With the forecasted rain for this evening, the ride today is being cancelled. Please come out next Thursday when hopefully the weather will be better.
Join us for a chill T-pace version of the traditional Thursday evening road ride! We'll go up Spruce to Grizzly Peak and Skyline, then turn right to head down Shepherd's Canyon and ride back through Montclair and via the Lake Temescal bike path. For those unfamiliar the route, the first 7 miles are climbing and then the rest of the ride is mostly flat or downhill. Lights and a light jacket/windbreaker are recommended.
The route does include a steep (13%) 2-block stretch (Roanoke Rd.) toward the end, but riders can avoid it if needed.
We will have multiple regroups and will stick to a T pace (10-12 mph). This ride is a no-drop ride and we welcome folks new to the club!

I am leading the shorter version, bu if you have time, you can extend the standard loop with an additional loop out to Cypress Mountain for a 40 mile ride. RWGPS Route
Time to kick off weekend gravel riding again! We'll be passing through Joaquin Miller, Redwood, and Chabot regional parks. The route is designed so it can be ridden without a mountain bike, but having at least a gravel or CX bike with 35mm+ tires is recommended. Expect a few brief steep sections which less experienced riders may prefer to walk. There will be a few stops with opportunities for water and bathrooms, but there is no lunch stop so make sure to bring enough food to sustain at least 4 hours of riding. There will be an opportunity for food/drinks at Rockridge afterwards depending on interest and group size.
Trail conditions are still uncertain with the recent rains so be prepared for the possibility of changes to the route. I will post an updated route here on the 13th if trail reports indicate some trails may not be suitable for riding.

The ride is ON! No rain is forecast for Sunday - yay! Temps predicted to be in the mid to high 50’s, which is perfect for climbing!
BUT - you are strongly advised to bring at least a windbreaker, and consider long pants and possibly layers/jacket/long fingered gloves etc. for the 30-40 or so mins of descent - which faces the windy plains of Livermore, and can be quite chilly!
See you there!
***Bring a sandwich or snack to enjoy at the top of the Morgan Territory climb, where we’ll stop to relish our accomplishment if the weather is nice! We’ll also make a stop at Draeger’s Market in Danville, on the way back to the start (about mile 38).

Start Location: Livermore - Mines Rd & Del Valle
Pre-registration
Let's check out the wildflowers on Mines Road before it gets too hot!
Out-and-back from the junction of Del Valle and Mines Road. Riders can turn around at the Junction Cafe at mile 24.4, or ride a few more miles to "the Elbow" in search of more wildflowers. Restrooms and water are available at Ernie Rodrigues Softball fields on South Livermore Ave. There are NO facilities on Mines Rd. Water might be available at the CalFire San Antonio Valley fire station about 1/2 mile before the Junction.
The Junction Cafe may be open, but don't count on it. There will be some birthday treats there anyway
Bring plenty of water and enough food, and let's enjoy this beautiful and remote road. Be prepared for two or three places where water crosses the road.
Many of us will stop at the Junction to have our lunch. Please pre-register! Here's the RidewithGPS route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/42811031

Meet at 9:25 am for a 9:35 am start
Start Location: Rockridge BART
Pre-registration
This is a re-post from last week which was canceled due to rain.
I will post an updated route here on the 18th if trail reports indicate some trails may not be suitable for riding.

GPC Route: Bears Loop
Start Location: Orinda - San Pablo Dam Rd and Bear Creek Rd
Pre-registration
Come test and develop your cycling skills. Test your fitness level and get in a great workout by riding the Bears Loop as a time trial. Or, for new club members (or any GPC member), this is a good ride to find your pace as measured by GPC (see link https://www.grizz.org/rides/ratings.php). Rider finishing times are usually shared in the ride report email to the club. While it is nice to see what times folks ride, reporting of rider times is optional, just let the ride leader know.
The first rider is off at 10:01 and a rider a minute after that. 20% chance of rain cancels. The ITT is open to both members and non-members; no need to join as in the past. Pre-registration is optional, but strongly preferred.

Lagoon Valley Park to Lake Berryessa Loop
Here is another, perfectly planned, ride to accommodate our wide variety of Wednesday Grizzlies!
Everyone starts at Lagoon Valley park: Choose your option of either riding out and back to the Lake Berryessa Glory Hole (40 miles and 1500 feet of climbing) or, complete the full loop around Mt. Vaca (55 miles and 3,000 feet of climbing). Wildflowers should be spectacular, but the main event will be viewing the Lake Berryessa Glory Hole. Bring your Grizzly good luck and let’s keep our fingers crossed!
Everyone is welcome!
- Download the route you plan to ride (below) and be sure to have it loaded onto your navigation device
- Please don't forget to allow time to purchase your parking ticket on entry to Lagoon Valley Park
- Meet at 10 a.m. Lagoon Valley Park; roll at 10:15 a.m.
- Check here for weather cancellations
- Bring plenty of water, snacks and lunch
- There will be little to no opportunity to pick up food nor fancy beverages. But, I’ve heard the scenery is worth it: Let the Grizzlies Decide!

Note: Tesla road washed out in February and is now closed (thanks Steve Hahn for the warning). I updated the route to go over Patterson pass instead. The mileage is nearly the same and the total elevation goes down.
Update: NO water at the fire station or at Junction. We will definitely stop at the spring but be sure to carry plenty of water between Patterson and back to start.
This is the season to ride this classic route. The weather forecast looks perfect and the spring wildflowers should be in full bloom along Corral Hollow and Del Puerto. In spite of the moderate total elevation this is still a challenging century due to the back loaded climbing and the steep final pitch of Del Puerto. We’ll stop at the market at mile 23, lunch in Patterson strip mall at mile 49. Don’t count on the junction cafe (mile 75) being open, but there is always water at the fire station. There’s also a spring along Del Puerto with potable water, I’ll try to put it on the map. Note there is 50 miles of backroads (no cell service) on this route so make sure you and your bike are in good shape and you have necessary spares, etc. Meet at Ernie Rodrigues field (yes there are bathrooms) and be ready to roll by 8:00. We’ll keep a high TM pace and try to get back by 4:00.

GPC Route:
Just Jalama Beach
Start Location:
Jalama Road pullout

Start Location:

GPC Route:
Pozo Loop
Start Location:
Santa Margarita Community Park
Pre-registration
Note the later start time since we will be driving to get to the start. Accessed on our travel day between Solvang and Paso Robles, Pozo Loop offers up stunning scenery! There is good parking at the Community Park. Bring two full water bottles, as the water at the Ranger Station still says non potable. We will watch the temperatures, we just did this ride and it was too hot (80 in town, 96 on bike). We generally eat at "The Porch" restaurant in town after the ride.
A cheerful adventurous attitude is encouraged. Strong navigation skills or riding with a buddy who knows the route can be very helpful. Please sign in online if you would like the leader to keep some track of you; there will not be a paper sign in sheet at the ride start. Two full water bottles and some nutrition makes good sense.

Tour de Paso
Start Location:
Adelaide Inn, Paso Robles

See you there!

The lunch stop is a bar without much in the way of food, so I suggest buying lunch at the first stop and carrying it to the second. There just aren't any other options in the area.
There is often a faster (more like M pace) group on this ride, but we all come back together at frequent regroups and lunch. Faster riders should feel free to push on after lunch. Just tell the leader first.
Park in the back of the Rockville Bike parking lot, not in front of the businesses. Please pre-register if you can.

Join us for a chill T-pace version of the traditional Thursday evening road ride! We'll go up Spruce to Grizzly Peak and Skyline, then turn right to head down Shepherd's Canyon and ride back through Montclair and via the Lake Temescal bike path. For those unfamiliar with the route, the first 7 miles are climbing and then the rest of the ride is mostly flat or downhill. Lights and a light jacket/windbreaker are strongly recommended, especially since the ride finishes around sunset.
The route does include a steep (13%) 2-block stretch (Roanoke Rd.) toward the end, but riders can avoid it if needed.
We will have multiple regroups and will stick to a T pace (10-12 mph). This ride is a no-drop ride and we welcome folks new to the club!
*Note that leaders rotate weekly, and we will try to always have two leaders at each ride.

More gravel trails similar to the sort ridden during the ride I led this past weekend. Strava route (note: this was updated on Friday). Meet at rockridge and we'll be riding a mix of road and trails. Bring a bike you are conformable riding on bumpy, uneven trails. There won't be anything super technical or steep, but we will be descending on rough dirt in places. No lunch stop so make sure to bring enough food for the entire ride. There will be a few opportunities for water and bathrooms. If there is interest there will be the option for food and drinks near Rockridge after the ride is over.
