Tackle one of the Epic Climb Series climbs and another epic climb-Bald Mountain and Lichau Road (also famous for being a "Gravity Road" and being the scene of Windows Wallpaper.
Note: Bald Mountain has a very steep, unpaved section. Gravel tires/gearing recommended but you can do most of it in skinny tires. I do not have a gravel bike so I expect to walk both part of the way up and down. It is, however, itself an epic climb and one of the two top climbs in Sonoma County https://pjammcycling.com/climb/383.Bald%20Mountain.
I will be biking over to Larkspur or San Rafael, meeting at 8:15, rolling by 8:25 at the Bay Trail at Buchanan. SMART train leaves Larkspur at 9:30. Please do sign up or contact me if you want to ride out to San Rafael. Otherwise, you can start in Santa Rosa-route is based on starting and finishing in Santa Rosa. Meeting time for that will be 10:40 at the SMART station, with rollout at 11.
Route map based on start/end in the same place; it's 47 miles ending at Cotati SMART station: https://www.strava.com/routes/2954659993466010298. Train leaves Cotati at 4:44 PM.
Regroup at the top and bottom of each climb. Pace I expect will be about 14-17 mph on flats depending on who shows up. We should have enough time to make it to grab food before taking the train back to San Rafael, otherwise we can get food in San Rafael (if taking the train).

Start Location: Oakland - Lake Temescal
Pre-registration
Let's go local this week. Meet at the Lake Temescal parking lot (6500 Broadway) and ride through Montclair, up BBR and out Redwood Road. Since we can't get to Redwood Canyon Golf Course, we'll turn right at the Marciel Gate in Anthony Chabot, and ride down to the group picnic ground where we will have lunch. Return via Redwood, Pinehurst, Skyline and Tunnel. Traffic on the outer section of Redwood and on Marciel Road should be blissfully light. Bring your lunch!

GPC Route: Heather Farm, Morgan Territory, Diablo Junction
Start Location: Walnut Creek - Heather Farm
Pre-registration
Meet in the penultimate northern parking lot of Heather Farm in Walnut Creek (by the baseball fields) for this ride to Clayton, Morgan Territory, and Diablo Junction. Lunch will be at Draeger's Market in Blackhawk Plaza. There may be an optional extension to Diablo summit for anyone interested.
Note that Heather Farm is about a mile from Pleasant Hill BART, which is probably the preferred way to get there. If you want to make the ride easier you can skip the Diablo climb after lunch and work your way back on the Iron Horse Trail or using this nicer route. Navigation for those options is up to you.
There is often a faster (more like M pace) group on this ride, but we all come back together at frequent regroups and lunch. We'll start when everyone who arrives by the meeting time is ready. If you arrive after the meeting time you may have to chase. You can probably catch us at the park in Clayton, where we will have a brief stop.

Also, ride will be shortened by ~6 miles in order to get to Nick's Pizza before it closes. We'll look at time/progress to assess which road we'll take down to Oakland/Berkeley. Official ride will terminate there, though ride leader(s) will cycle back to North Berkeley BART after food.
Join us for a chill T-pace version of the traditional Thursday evening road ride! We'll go up Spruce to Grizzly Peak and Skyline, then turn right to head down Shepherd's Canyon and ride back through Montclair and via the Lake Temescal bike path. For those unfamiliar with the route, the first 7 miles are climbing and then the rest of the ride is mostly flat or downhill. Lights and a light jacket/windbreaker are strongly recommended, especially since the ride finishes around sunset.
The route does include a steep (13%) 2-block stretch (Roanoke Rd.) toward the end, but riders can avoid it if needed.
We will have multiple regroups and will stick to a T pace (10-12 mph average over the course of the ride). This ride is a no-drop ride and we welcome folks new to the club!

Pre-registration
Riding out of Pleasanton this route takes us up Mines road and over Mt Hamilton from the steep side. The Rainbow Junction Cafe opened May 18, so we should be able to get lunch and drinks there. On the way, we’ll pause briefly at Ernie Rodriguez fields for a pit stop, and at the top of Mt Hamilton for snacks before starting the long drop back down. Current forecast predicts cool temperatures.
This is an open-jaw route which starts and ends at different BART stations, so either plan on using BART, or you can plan your own addition to close the loop. There are also alternatives to shorten the route, such as riding Mines road out and back. A Berryessa train allows you to transfer at Bay Fair station at 8:34 and arrive at Dublin-Pleasanton at 8:51. Going back, the Berryessa trains leave every 20 minutes on the 16s.

Mandatory pre-registration
Fun and difficult Central Valley century with a couple of hard climbs.
Starting on the first San Joaquins train of the day. Amtrak leaves Emeryville at 7:46 AM (also options for Jack London, Richmond, and Martinez).and gets to Modesto around 10 AM. See schedule here: https://d34tiw64n5z4oh.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/JPA17915_TimetableEdits_September_V2.pdf
Return from Merced at 7:23 PM, arrive back at Emeryville at around 10:30 PM. We will eat lunch at the top of Old Priest Grade at the cafe there. Given the time constraints, pace will likely be 20 mph on flat sections (depending on wind). We may also do some additional dirt (time permitting), though it should be all rideable on road tires
Old Priest Grade is around 13% for 2 miles, one of the steepest paved climbs in California. Make sure you have low enough gearing and good enough legs to do this

Please register if you want to join so we know to watch for others. There are options doing this ride by driving to Modesto too if you are interested in that.

Heeey, I don’t think I can do a whole afterparty tomorrow. I am exhausted from the past week; I signed up for too much stuff! Ride is still on, and if you guys want to get a snack somewhere in El Cerrito after the ride, that would be cool. But no actual party at the house. 😔
Here are two other bridges you can check off for the weekend: Golden Gate Bridge and Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Hopefully, we will beat the crowds by starting in the city. Restrooms in Sausalito at Mile 10. Lunch at Woodland Market at Mile 20. Restrooms at Larkspur at Mile 31.
Getting to the start by BART? We recommend taking BART to Embarcadero Station and biking 0.25 miles to the meeting spot, in front of the Ferry Building.
There are tentative plans for post-ride snacks in MJ’s backyard, at Richmond & Schmidt, 1 mile north of El Cerrito Plaza BART.

Shorten the ride to about 42 miles by starting in Nicasio. We should pass through there about 10:20 or so.

We will have multiple regroups and will stick to a T pace (10-12 mph). This ride is a no-drop ride and we welcome folks new to the club!
*Note that leaders rotate weekly, and we will try to always have two leaders at each ride.
