Hello, November!

Join us for a gentle, 50-mile loop, through the best of Marin. Ride starts and ends at McNear’s Beach (no entrance fee) in San Rafael.

We’ll ride counterclockwise around China Camp, pass Nicasio to reach the Cross Marin Trail and ride through Samuel P. Taylor Park; lunch will be in the picnic area next to the restrooms. Our ride concludes as we circle back to McNear’s Beach – doing some urban riding --through the city centers of Fairfax, San Anselmo and San Rafael.

Optional photo op /coffee/bakery stop at gluten free Flour Craft Bakery and Marin Coffee Roasters next to the “world famous” Yoda statue in Imagination Park.

WED NOV 1 5!/TM/17 Wednesday Night Tilden Trails Bart to Bart
Leader: Fletcher Stump Smith     (415) 212-8451    text
Meet at 5:20 pm for a 5:25 pm start
Start Location: El Cerrito Plaza BART
Pre-registration

Route
It's getting dark earlier but that doesn't mean we can't still ride trails. Make sure to bring lights bright enough to see by and be prepared for a few steep sections on the climbs and descents which may be rocky. Expect lots of climbing with 3000ft in only 17 miles. Wide tires and easy gears are good to have on this one. There will be regular regroups at all the major junctions to make sure the group stays close together. If you only want to do part of the ride feel free to peel off early, just make sure to let us know.

THU NOV 2 3/TM,M/70 Duros West - Mines Road
Leader: Mark Nienberg     (510) 812-9312    text
Meet at 9:30 am
Start Location: Livermore - Ernie Rodrigues Softball fields
Pre-registration

We'll ride out and back on Mines Road for a total of 70 miles, which you can shorten to 60 by stopping at the junction rather than continuing to the elbow. The Junction Cafe is supposedly open under new owners, and cash-only. I plan to bring a few extra snacks just in case. We can probably get water at the fire station or junction, but bring two bottles anyway. The start location has rest rooms and water.

There will definitely be a TM group on this ride, even if I am the only one in it. I won't be trying to keep up with the front group, as I am still recovering. I will probably skip the elbow to save energy for the return.

THU NOV 2 5!/TM/16.5 Thursday Evening South Park Repeats (repeats weekly)
Leader: Anne Schonfield     (510) 851-4749    text
Leader: Mark Bauer     (510) 508-3546
Meet at 5:20 pm for a 5:30 pm start
Start Location: North Berkeley BART
Pre-registration

Please join us for a weekly Thursday evening ride. This is a short ride but with a steep climb! We’ll head up Virginia St and Spruce to Spruce/Grizzly Peak for our first regroup, then head out along Wildcat Canyon to South Park Rd. From there, we’ll climb South Park, descend, and climb it again as many times as the mood strikes us (usually two or three times is enough, but individual riders can shorten or lengthen the ride as desired). South Park is closed to cars starting November 1st, which makes it perfect for winter riding. If we complete two round trip ascents up South Park then back to N Berkeley Bart, expect about 2,300 feet of elevation gain. This is a great way to stay in shape over the winter!

NOTE: This is a night ride. Come with bright front and rear lights (and make sure they work). 20% chance or greater of rain cancels the ride. Please contact ride leaders with any questions.

Day Light Savings ends on 11/5. In order to end this ride around the Bay in day the light, let's ride it on 11/4. The last time we did this ride, I accidentally included a steep short hill (some said it showed as 20% on their computers) from HWY 1 to Skyline in Pacifica. The climb has been deleted. Route is: 3 bridges (Hwy 1- Hwy 13) - A bike ride in Oakland, CA (ridewithgps.com)

The ride will start at Rockridge BART at 7:30 AM (meet up at 7:20AM). We ride over Richmond and Golden Gate Bridges. Will head down HWY 1 in SF. The route takes us down the Peninsula via San Bruno, Millbrae, San Mateo to the Dumbarton Bridge. We'll head up North and eventually paralleling HWY 13 back to the Rockridge BART station.

There will be a nutrition stop at the Round House Cafe at the southern end of the GGB. A lunch break in Millbrae. And another nutrition stop in Union City at around 85 miles.

Please bring gear and nutrition appropriate for a 110 mile ride.

Haven't ridden area in years. I didn’t see anything on ride schedule for me this weekend so I’m giving it a shot after finding route in GPC library and see how it goes. Decided to post at last minute since I was going to ride it regardless. I didn’t see any road closures on route. T pace will be continuous riding, going faster at times on the flats since I’m not fast on hills. Start at Anna Jean Cummings County Park, 461 Soquel San Jose Rd, Soquel, CA 95073. Head through Aptos, bathroom stop at mile 11.8, Corralitos Market at mile 26 for lunch, 9 mile climb up Eureka Canyon Rd stopping at corner of Buzzard Lagoon Rd mile 34.9 and then head to Summit Store at mile 42.7. After the market head back down to Soquel San Jose Rd to the park, a 10 mile descent.

THU NOV 9 3/TM,M/71 Duros West - Taste of Napa (without the drive)
Leader: Mark Nienberg     (510) 812-9312    text
Meet at 9:30 am
GPC Route: Rockville to Lake Hennessey
Start Location: Rockville Bike shop
Pre-registration

This ride starts in nearby Rockville, but extends up into the Napa Valley as far as Lake Hennessey. We'll stop for a snack at Silverado Market & Bakery (mile 21) and have lunch at Turtle Rock (mile 48). The lunch stop is a bar without much in the way of food, so I suggest buying lunch at the first stop and carrying it to the second. There just aren't any other options in the area.

There is often a faster (more like M pace) group on this ride, but we all come back together at frequent regroups and lunch. Faster riders should feel free to push on after lunch. Just tell the leader first.

Park in the back of the Rockville Bike parking lot, not in front of the businesses. Please pre-register if you can.

Wild Flour bakery, Monte Rio, Guerneville, Sweetwater Springs Road. I hate missing ASSR; did lots of GPC rides this year, but this may be last time to do this ride before weather changes keep me from traveling a lot. When I ride it, I go to Wild Flour Bakery at 8 am. Friends, neighbors and coworkers asking for their bread and scones. Wild Flour Bakery, mile 8.5, Lightwave Coffee and Kitchen, mile 18.2, lunch. Water stop at mile 38.9; has bathroom sometimes. Sweetwater Springs Road is kind of remote but very scenic. Downhill some 16 % descents, can be wet this time of year with cattle grates; I go slow downhill. Very scenic route. Ragle Ranch Park start, 500 Ragle Rd, Sebastopol, CA 95472.

SAT NOV 18 5/M/105 Mount Hamilton loop from Pleasanton, counterclockwise

Meet at 7:00 am for a 7:05 am start   Rain Date: Sun Nov 19
Start Location: Pleasanton - Neal & Railroad Ave
Mandatory pre-registration
UPDATE:

Saturday's forecast is for rain. So we'll try for Sunday -- it looks good for now. We'll confirm on Saturday. Meanwhile, the route is now good for downloading.

With over 4000' of climbing from its base, panoramic views of the south bay and the hidden valleys of the Diablo range, historic observatory buildings at its summit, and passage through a number of distinctive plant communities, the Mt Hamilton loop is one of the fabled rides of the Bay Area.

The route: out Calaveras; up the frontside of Mt Hamilton; down the backside; San Antonio Valley and Mines Rd; return via the Livermore valley suburban/agricultural interface. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/44978477 (Don't download until after ~7pm on Friday because until then it is subject to minor debugging.)

Meet 07:00 ready to ride. Ready to ride means your bike is set up, you already went to the restroom, you're clicked in, and you're ready to pay attention and listen to ride announcements :-) The early start is to increase chances of finishing before sundown.

Public restrooms are available in the park one block south of the meeting place.

Refreshment stops at: 1. San Jose (Rotten Robbie gas station at Piedmont & Sierra Rds); 2. Mt Hamilton Observatory Visitor Center (vending machines, cash only); 3. Junction Bar & Grill (you can order food, but it can be slow; also now cash only under current mgmt).

Please bring: front and rear lights (just in case); ample food/fuel (just in case); your bike in excellent mechanical condition; ample clothing in layers (it will be cold-warm-cold); cash (see above); and a happy smile! This should not be your first century nor your first self-supported long ride.

Significant chance of rain triggers the rain date. Check back here for updates the evening before the ride.

THU NOV 23 5!/TM/16.5 Thursday South Park Repeats, Thanksgiving edition
Leader: Anne Schonfield     (510) 851-4749    text
Meet at 9:20 am for a 9:30 am start
Start Location: North Berkeley BART
Pre-registration

For Thanksgiving day, we'll do our weekly South Park repeat ride in the morning. If you've been curious about joining this weekly evening ride, here's your chance to join the ride in the daylight! This is a short ride but with a steep climb. We’ll head up Virginia St and Spruce to Spruce/Grizzly Peak for our first regroup, then head out along Wildcat Canyon to South Park Rd. From there, we’ll climb South Park, descend, and climb it again as many times as the mood strikes us (usually twice is enough, but individual riders can shorten or lengthen the ride as desired). South Park is closed to cars starting November 1st, which makes it perfect for winter riding. If we complete two round trip ascents up South Park then back to N Berkeley Bart, expect about 2,300 feet of elevation gain. This is a great way to burn some calories before Thanksgiving dinner!

20% chance or greater of rain cancels the ride. Please contact ride leader with any questions.

For this special Thanksgiving edition we will ride a short but hilly route around Mt Tam with an optional up-and-back to the summit. Everything will be closed so bring snacks. Water and restrooms at the start and also at the Fairfax police station (mile 6). Regroup at Alpine Dam (mile 14). At Rock Springs (mile 20) you can save 6 miles by choosing to skip the summit. Return to Mill Valley by Panoramic and Sequoia Valley Rd, then over Camino Alto back to Larkspur. Finish using the Larkspur path back to Piper Park.

Please arrive at the park by the meeting time. We'll start as soon as everyone who arrived by the meeting time is ready. There are lots of turns in the first few miles so we will stick close together for that part.

Join us for the Trifecta Turkey Challenge! Three epic climbs: Black and Gist Road, Montevina, and Soda Springs Road. 6400 feet of climbing in 33 miles! It's insane! But there is one saving grace -- you don't have to do all three climbs. If you are not feeling the Turkey mojo, you can cut one or two of the climbs because all of the climbs are out and back from the main road around the reservoir.

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/45032219. (Thanks Misha for your help in putting together this route).

The start place is Lexington Elementary, 23800 Summit Rd, Los Gatos, CA 95033. Bring lots of layers for warmth, food, and water.

Three Climbs:

Black Road + Gist Road: 3.14 miles 1,587.93 feet elevation Average grade 9.6% Steepest quarter mile 12.3%

Montevina 3.5 miles. 1,581.36 feet of elevation Avg. grade 8.7% Steepest quarter mile 12.1%

Soda Springs. 5.32 miles 2355 feet elevation Average grade 8.4% Steepest quarter mile at 9.5% (Ride until deadend)

Extra note from Misha:

There are portable toilets at Miller Point parking east of the reservoir and the parking lot north of the reservoir. The only restroom that I know of on the side Black and Montevina climbs is a detour one mile up Bear Creek road. You could add it to the route by descending Skyline + Bear Creek instead of Gist: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/45032316.

Water and food aren't a problem as you will pass by the starting point.

Hope to see you there!

Our ride concludes as we circle back to McNear’s Beach – doing some urban riding --through the city centers of Fairfax, San Anselmo and San Rafael.

Meet at 10:00 am (usually) for this ride. Rain cancels. You can also join our web forum and check the forum archives for the current information or contact Mark Sapiro at (415) 388-8910.

Check back here for possible cancellation. It looks possible to get this ride done but I won't hesitate to cancel if it might rain.

We'll ride out to Martinez for lunch (mile 33) via the Bears, Alhambra, and pig farm. Snack stop at Nancy Boyd park (mile 21), then Franklin Canyon to McEwen (the easy way) and the George Miller Trail. Return via Bear Creek.

If coming from the East side, you can meet the group at the foot of Wildcat. Let me know if that is your plan. We'll collect you if you are there, but we won't wait if you aren't. Timing is up to you.

UPDATE:

Tonight's ride is canceled due to likely rain.

Previous update had the wrong times… This ride’s start time is based on the Antioch-bound train that arrives at 9:35am. If you were planning to take the train arriving at 9:55am, we might have already left.

[RWGPS route] Let's ride Diablo and maybe (unlikely) see a tarantula or two. We'll start from Pleasant Hill BART, go up North Gate, and return via South Gate and down Mount Diablo Scenic Boulevard past the Athenian School. Snack (bring your own), water, and restrooms at the junction (Mile 11.5). Lunch at Blackhawk (Mile 21.9).

Want to ride to the top? Xiao Hui is happy to lead a group to the summit; let us know if you're interested in this option. The summit out-and-back is an extra 9 miles and 1600 feet.

Bring snacks to get you through until our late-ride stop in Pt Reyes Station, where the Bovine Bakery and other options await. M and T-paced riders comfortable at navigating on their own are welcome, but leader will ride a strong TM pace. Minimal re-groups (Nicasio, Pt Reyes Station).
